Portrait of an Alumna featuring Melinda Marquardt (Class of 2008).

When did you attend Francis Holland School and what initially brought you to the school?

I attended Francis Holland School from Year 7-11. My parents were drawn to the school for its strong academic reputation, its focus on creativity, and central location. It was the perfect place to develop both intellectually and artistically.

What’s your fondest memory from your schooldays and why does it stand out to you?

There are so many wonderful memories. I really enjoyed Music GCSE, especially composing songs. One of the highlights was performing in the choir at Euro Disney during one of our choir trips, it was such a fun and memorable experience.

I also loved ceramics; I think it was an after-school club, but it was such a relaxed and creative space where we could do whatever we wanted. That freedom to experiment was really special. And then, of course, there was netball, I loved being on the team, though I was always in trouble with Mrs. Margetson for my skirt being too short and for wearing the wrong shoes.

Is there a teacher or subject that had a lasting impact on you, and if so, why?

My English teacher had a lasting impact on me because they really encouraged me to express myself, which helped me develop confidence in my creativity. That ability to think independently and articulate ideas has been so valuable throughout my career.

Can you share some key highlights from your journey since leaving FHS?

Since leaving Francis Holland, I pursued a degree in Fine Art and then found myself drawn to the world of textiles. I worked for Fabricut, traveling across Europe and Russia, learning about the global textile industry. Eventually, I launched The Vale London, a brand that marries fine art with home textiles, creating unique, luxurious designs.

How did you come to be in your current/most recent career?

It was a combination of passion, experience, and a realisation that there was a gap in the market for truly unique textiles that tell a story. After a decade in the industry, I felt there was room for a brand that celebrated individuality and artistry, which led me to start The Vale London.

What are the most interesting parts of your role?

The most exciting part is the creative process - translating inspirations from my travels, history, and art into tangible designs. I also love working with artisans around the world, bringing craftsmanship into every collection. Seeing my designs come to life in beautiful interiors is incredibly rewarding.

How has your career evolved since you left school, and are there any surprising twists?

I never imagined I would be an entrepreneur, I always knew I wanted to be in a creative field, but starting my own company wasn’t initially part of the plan. It’s exciting to see how my passions continue to evolve, and I love that no two days are the same.

What advice would you give to current students about making the most of their time here?

Explore every opportunity. You never know which subject, teacher, or experience will inspire your future path. Be open to learning, not just in the classroom but from the people around you.

What one piece of advice would you give to other FHS alumni/current pupils?

Follow your instincts and trust your creativity. If you’re passionate about something, find a way to incorporate it into your career. The most fulfilling paths are the ones that align with what truly excites you.

If you could go back in time and speak to your younger self during school, what would you say?

Believe in yourself more. Everything works out in ways you don’t expect, and sometimes the things that don’t go to plan are actually guiding you toward something better.

Best quote you live by and why?

"Creativity takes courage." – Henri Matisse.

This quote resonates deeply with me because stepping into a creative career, launching my own brand, and trusting my artistic vision all required courage. It’s a reminder to keep pushing forward, even when things feel uncertain.
